Weekend Graded Stakes Action
Written by trackmasterplus on May 21, 2009 – 4:36 pm -Several nice graded stakes this weekend.
Starting at Belmont, distaff turf marathoners take to the Belmont green in the Grade II Sheepshead Bay Handicap at 11 furlongs. Chalk players should have no beef with the Darley-owned Criticism, who’s won almost half of her 17 career starts including a pair of graded stakes at Gulfstream this winter. Her primary challenger is likely to be course specialist Backseat Rhythm who is 3-3 on the Belmont inner oval.
Out west, in the Grade I Milady Handicap, trainer John Sheriffs would appear to hold all the aces as he sends out Life is Sweet, 3 for 3 this year, and last year’s 3-year old filly champion and Horse of the Year finalist Zenyatta, who is undefeated in nine lifetime starts. Don’t expect much of a price on either.
The traditional Memorial Day fixture at Belmont is the Metropolitan Handicap (aka the Met Mile). The field wasn’t set at press time but was expected to include My Pal Charlie, Smooth Air, and Bribon.
